Wild Math: Learn Math Outside!

Using the natural environment as the basis for your math curriculum makes concepts more concrete and increases children’s attention spans. Rachel Tidd is a homeschooling mother of two adventurous boys in nature-filled Ithaca, NY. She taught first grade as well as grades 3-6 as a special education teacher. She is extending her fun, hands-on learning through the Wild Math curriculum.. Wild Math is a math curriculum for K–5. The curriculum is organized around units and skills typically covered. Each skill is listed followed by activities on how to learn and practice the skill. This math guide is packed with ideas and color photos of how to use what is naturally abundant in your area to learn math! Use leaves, flowers, acorns, fruit, muffin tins, egg cartons and buckets to explore multiplication and division. Parents love that the math skills described here have been compiled using several different math curriculums and represent what is typically taught in that grade in the United States.Parents may not like that they have to purchase additional suggested materials and gear for learning outside. If you’re looking for a simpler, more straightforward curriculum then Wild Math is not for you. Each unit also includes a list of my favorite math books and games at the end of each chapter. Books and games are great outside in warm weather and inside during extreme weather or dark winter evenings.

Grades: Kindergarten to Grade 5

Cost: The Wild Math curriculum costs $20! The other supplementary materials can be purchased off of Amazon for varying prices...links are on the Wild Maths website.
