TalkBox.Mom

The Talk Box Mom book, box and audio together supports families in learning and conversing in a new language on Day 1. There are two reasons why this product stands out - it incorporates new language learning within a practical, everyday living context and it involves the entire family, so it seems less like learning and more like a fun family activity. While the learning itself may not be in-depth, being conversational in a whole new language in itself is a great skill to have. It is inspired by the owners personal experiences - her goal is to have families (like hers), start speaking a new language on Day 1 and progress to conversational levels within weeks. There are three components to learning Spanish with this tool - a phrasebook, a monthly subscription tool box that contains words and phrases relating to a specific topic and an app that has the phrases spoken by a native speaker. Talk Box Mom recommends using all three to support an immersive Spanish learning experience. Talk Box is a great choice for people who wish to learn Spanish together as a family. Parents love that it is instantaneous, that is they can start talking in a new language on Day 1 and that it has practical application in everyday life as it happens. There aren't enough reviews that are critical of the product but the 9 box subscription costs around $700 ($80 per box) which may be steep for some. Buying the phrasebook first and trying it out with the audio support may be a great first step before spending on the subscription boxes which are a bigger investment.

Grades: All grades (includes parents!)

Cost: The phrasebook costs $35 and each subscription box is $80 (there are 9 boxes in total). The book and the boxes can be ordered separately.
