The Montessori Method: A multi-sensory approach to learning cursive handwriting.

The Montessori method is over 100 years old developed by Maria Montessori in Italy. Montessori physical materials and worksheets are available all over the internet. The Montessori Family lists several, activities and kits to help students practice cursive handwriting. Montessori is unique in that it teaches students cursive handwriting through practical life activities. Maria Montessori believed every child had an innate capacity for learning and that children’s hands were better suited naturally to writing in cursive, then print. In the Montessori method, children have a long-time to practice and build up to handwriting until they ask for their first lesson (for example by tracing the sandpaper letters with their fingers). For example, and shoulder movements while polishing, washing the table, twisting to open bottle and so on (big clockwise movements are important for writing). Montessori Family recommends several tool kits to help immerse students with cursive writing. T They also recommend a tracing letter board. Sand paper letters are another wonderful way for children to start feeling the letters before writing them. Montessori developed many materials and they can get pricey, but they’re also available in many free and discounted parent sell and exchange groups on Facebook.

Grades: Cursive writing is widely taught all around Europe, but children are not taught reading and writing until they are around 6 years old. In the UK, children start school at 4 years old so penmanship is simplified to enable younger children to write.

Cost: Many free Montessori worksheets can be found on Teachers Pay Teachers. Lots of free and discounted materials are also available in online facebook groups.
